SUMMARY:2019 Mar 12 G3 - The Edelman Trust Barometer: Measuring Your Clients
DESCRIPTION:The Edelman Trust Barometer\, the world’s largest survey of trust in institutions conducted in 28 countries shows that only 40% of Japanese employees trust the company they work for. This is somewhat counter-intuitive given the image of the self-sacrificing\, all for the company image that is held about Japans salarymen. Ross will address this and other issues including what is behind the Trump phenomenon and rising populism in the world’s advanced economies. \nMarch’s CEO Insights meeting will welcome Edelman’s Japan boss\, Mr. Ross Rowbury. Ross has been living and working in Japan for 35 years. Originally working in finance\, Ross moved to the public relations industry some twenty years ago. Over that period he has been advising executives from both Japanese and non-Japanese companies on communications strategy and implementation. \nDate– Tuesday\, 12 March 1230PM-1400PM\nVenue–\nRoppongi Hills Club- Private Dining Room – The Horizon Room\n51 fl. Roppongi Hills Mori Tower\, 6-10-1 Roppongi\, Minato-ku\,\nTokyo\, 106-6151 Japan

SUMMARY:2019 Feb C28 - Can the Corporation Really Change Its Culture?
DESCRIPTION:“Culture change” continues to be a buzzword in business. Many companies want it. Many invest huge energy into making it happen. Most fail. (According to various studies\, up to 90% of companies do not achieve the outcomes they set out for.) Why is culture change so elusive? Christopher Domitter\, currently Senior Vice President\, Communications at MetLife Japan\, has strong views on why this is the case based on his own experience across several industries and markets in Asia. Drawing from his background as head of a wide range of corporate communications disciplines including employee engagement\, sponsorship\, and CSR\, as well as a branding and identity consultant\, Christopher will lead and provoke interesting discussion around the dimensions of success and what constitutes global best practice.  Christopher is from Vancouver Canada. He has lived in Asia for close to 25 years\, including Japan\, Korea\, Hong Kong\, and Malaysia\, working in the sports\, banking\, pharma and insurance sectors. He has developed brand positioning and verbal identity strategies for famous brands such as Nikon and Nissan. He is a top-notch analog photographer\, a discipline (among others) that informs his understanding of design thinking – a mindset that underpins much of his approach to solving communications challenges. \nDate – Friday\, 8 Feb 2019 1230PM-1400PM\nVenue –\nRoppongi Hills Club: Roppongi Hills Club- La Cucina Restaurant\n51 fl. SUMMARY:2019 Restart (C28)- Getting A Head Start And Winning
DESCRIPTION:January brings many new thoughts and resolutions.  Gyms are crowded with business people trying to get healthy for the first month or so of the year.  As the CEO\, we don’t have the luxury of ‘letting our guard down’ in business.  We must be thinking and anticipating what market forces will do for our brand\, what products will blow out\, and what products or services to put on the back burner. \nIn the first CEO Insights Network luncheon of the year\, we will have to take a look at what we expect to see in 2019.  Specifically\, we will discuss three areas \n\nEconomic- Will we have boom or bust? What are customers looking for? Where will the USD\, JPY\, EURO head?\nPolitical- What will the government be doing that may affect our staffing\, our taxation\, our operations costs?  Is there any PC (political correctness) initiative that may hit?\nPersonal- How do you deal with the head office?  What are the growth areas for investments in the new year?  How can I be more productive personally?\n\nYou will leave the CI meeting enlightened\, and no doubt inspired. \n  \n\n\nDate– Friday\, 11 Jan 2019 1230PM-1400PM\nVenue–\nRoppongi Hills Club- Roppongi Hills Club- La Cucina Restaurant\n51 fl. Roppongi Hills Mori Tower\,\n6-10-1 Roppongi\, Minato-ku\,\nTokyo\, 106-6151 Japan \nP.S. SUMMARY:2018 Oct C28 - Buffing Up Your Company- A Successful Acquisition
DESCRIPTION:The Wall Street Journal is filled with articles talking about one company buying another.  Corporate and private equity executives foresee an acceleration of merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in 2018\, both in the number of deals and the size of the transactions. However\, there are some great case studies bosses can learn from in Japan.\n\nJapan’s largest mobile phone provider\, NTT Docomo\, acquired Oak Lawn Marketing.  Oak Lawn Marketing\, a Nagoya-based marketing firm with it’s contact centers in Nagoya\, Tokyo\, and Hokkaido was a good match the strategy of the mammoth company moving towards eCommerce.  We’ll hear reflections from the M&A expert Bruce Pomer as well as our own regular member Harry Hill on the deal\, how it went down\, and the value of buying yourself into a business through acquiring another company.\n\nDate: 11 Oct 2018 (Thursday)\nTime: 12:30pm to 2:00pm\nVenue: Roppongi Hills Club – La Cucina\n51F Roppongi Hills Mori Tower\, 6-10-1 Roppongi Minato-ku\, 106-6151

SUMMARY:2018 Oct G3 - "Making Your Company The Greatest Show On Earth"
DESCRIPTION:Having a great place to work is something people are proud of. From entry-level employee to c-level\, people tend to stay longer at companies that make them comfortable.  Recently\, there are many trends.  Some companies have gone to the open office plan with no private offices.  Others have slimmed down regional offices and put regional headquarters in Singapore or Hong Kong.  Finally some companies have now moved to co-working spaces to increase flexibility\, attract young talent and comply with millennials’ expectations. \n  \nIn the Oct\, we will welcome our own Ci Member Mr. Laurent Jacquemin\, MD of AXA IM Real Assets for APAC.  He will share his insights on the evolving working environment.  Laurent moved his organization to Japan from Singapore in early 2018.  The meeting will be moderated by Edelman’s Japan boss Mr. Ross Rowbury. \nDate: 9 Oct 2018 (Tuesday)\nTime: 12:30pm to 2:00pm\nVenue: Roppongi Hills Club – La Cucina\n51F Roppongi Hills Mori Tower\, 6-10-1 Roppongi Minato-ku\, 106-6151

SUMMARY:2018 July C28 – The Polarization of Trust And What It Means For You And Your Clients
DESCRIPTION:“In modern society\, we delegate important aspects of our well-being to the four institutions of business (economic well-being)\, government (national security and public policy)\, media (information and knowledge) and NGOs (social causes and issues). \nIn order to feel safe delegating important aspects of our lives and well-being to others\, we need to trust them to act with integrity and with our best interests in mind. Trust\, therefore\, is at the heart of an individual’s relationship with an institution and\, by association\, its leadership. \nIf trust in these institutions diminishes\, we begin to fear that we are no longer in safe\, reliable hands. Without trust\, the fabric of society can unravel to the detriment of all. \nRoss Rowbury\, President of Edelman Japan will present on “The Polarization of Trust” and what it means for you and your clients.“

SUMMARY:2018 June C28 - Outsourcing Solutions to Enable Advanced Business Performance
DESCRIPTION:We’ve all heard the phrase: “If you want to do something right\, you have to do it yourself.” It’s very easy to understand the idea that the best person to do the job is yourself. However\, as business grows\, good leaders must understand where to focus and where to pull in outside help. In our June CI\, we will be talking with Bruce Darrington and getting his insights on making the most of outside resources. Bruce has experience building businesses around APAC that will make for a great exchange. \nBruce has had a wide experience of building up businesses in the financial area across Asia and more recently in the Professional Accounting business. On selling his own accounting practice 9 years ago in Thailand to Mazars (the only global partnership in the Professional Audit/Tax/Accounting area of business)\, he then moved to Japan 8 years ago to head up and grow Mazars practice from the handful of people that existed at the time. During the past 8 years\, the biggest growth for Mazars business has come from providing outsourced solutions for international companies; Bruce now devotes his time to building this business line where he feels that Mazars already has some significant market leadership. \nDrawing from his experiences\, Bruce will be presenting an interactive session on “Outsourcing Solutions to Enable Advanced Business Performance”.

SUMMARY:2018 May C28 – Managing Millennials
DESCRIPTION:The business world these days is never static. As c-level executives\, we must constantly steer our organizations through competitive markets\, new technological advancements and changes in societal values and attitudes. \nIn the May CI meeting we will be talking about one such societal change. The generation of people born between the late 1980s and early 2000s that started entering the workforce in the last 5 years have enormous potential\, but are also bringing some very different ideas and expectations to the workplace that are at times proving a challenge for the Baby Boomer and Gen. X manager. SUMMARY:2018 April C28 - Understanding the NPO And Motivating Your Team Through CSR And Community
DESCRIPTION:Non-profit organizations and volunteering is a common thing in many western nations. For Japan\, the concept and understanding of doing volunteering to do something\, giving finances towards helping others\, and community service have a different understanding. However\, companies that understand the effectiveness of team building toward reaching corporate goals have many times accelerated past their competition. \nIn the April CI meeting we will have a very special guest who has done more than built an influential organization. We’ll have Charles McJilton founder of Second Harvest sharing insights on CSR\, how other companies are building their brand by helping others\, and new concepts on how to contribute but actually receive funds back through their giving also known as Social Impact Bonds. \nLooking forward to meeting you at the interactive CI lunch! \nAbout Our Guest-\nCharles McJilton has been pioneering food banking in Japan for more than 18 years. He has a unique approach and philosophy based on on his more than 25 years involvement with those in need and his 15 months living in cardboard box alongside the Sumida River (January 1997- April 1998). He strongly believes that business practices can be used to improve the effectiveness of nonprofits. As the CEO and founder of Second Harvest Japan he is leading the development of a food safety-net for Tokyo to support 100\,000 people by 2020. To fund this ambitious project he is promoting social impact bonds. During time with him he will share his philosophy and approach along with how social impact bonds are an innovative way to fund social change.
