SUMMARY:2017 Oct C8 -Being The CEO Who Presents With Panache
DESCRIPTION:One of the most important skills in business is the ability to make presentations in a manner that will engage\, educate\, or sometimes entertain your audience. You may be presenting a business plan\, a new idea\, a change in sales methods or any other topic. What you are presenting is important\, but how you deliver it is even more important. You want your message to be heard\, sure\, but more than that you want your message to be remembered. Joe Peters will share insights from his years of Toastmasters experience as well as the lessons learned over a lifetime of public speaking while holding executive offices. \nJoe is past president of two of Tokyo’s most active English language Toastmasters Clubs and is currently the VP of Education for Tokyo American Club Toastmasters. He also holds Toastmasters International’s Competent Communicator designation. Joe is a long-time entrepreneur\, former CEO of AXA Life in Singapore\, and currently owns one company in Japan and two in the USA. We are excited to have him at CEO Insights.

SUMMARY:2017 Oct C20 – The Changing Political Landscape And Economic Reform

SUMMARY:2017 Oct G3- Practical Tips For Busy CEOs on Staying Mentally and Physically Healthy
DESCRIPTION:When we are busy our health is the last thing we think to look after. We get caught up in the mindset that we don’t have time. This is a mistake and it does not have to be this way. 70% of the Fortune 500 CEOs exercise at least once each day\, and 50% do some form of meditation or quiet time.\nThis is no coincidence. It doesn’t have to be a choice of work or health. The two can go together. \nLong time Tokyo resident\, and entrepreneur Andy Morgan will join us for a special meeting about you\, the CEO. Andy will drawing on his experience of coaching people over the last 6 years in his fitness business\, that brings the latest in health and fitness to the Japanese market from the West. Andy will share practical insights on how he has helped busy execs and entrepreneurs look after their health and stay on-top of business.

SUMMARY:2017 Sep C8 - The Future Of Africa and ME\, From The Eyes Of An Ambassador
DESCRIPTION:In our upcoming Sept CI meeting\, we have secured special guest Bulhan Hersi to join us. \nBulhan is essentially Ambassador without portfolio for the Federal Republic of Somalia. Educated in Sweden and the United States\, Bulhan has lived for 12 years in Japan. \nBulhan will elaborate on the current situation in Somalia and the historical underpinnings of why the situation today is so much in the news. He will tie into how the Japanese government sees the region\, the issue of piracy (and from where/how it emerged in the first place)\, Somalia’s precarious position geopolitically\, and why this impacts Japan’s role in the region. In doing so\, the following related issues are unavoidable: \n	•	The Middle East fueling tensions in the Horn of Africa: the Qatar / Yemen issue;\n	•	The background religious influence
\n	•	Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates increasing military influence in the region.
\n	•	The Iranian influence in the region \nThe September lunch will offer you a new perspective on the influence of politics\, business\, and religion in the ME and Africa; Somalia’s role is key to understanding this.

SUMMARY:2017 Sep C20 - Understanding The Business Of Bases And the Military In Asia Pacific
DESCRIPTION:For decades Japan and the United States have worked together on military bases spread throughout Japan. Those bases don’t end in Japan but are grounded throughout the Asia Pacific region. The bases are not just the political and government relationships that we read about in the news\, but also considerable business and processes associated with the military. In the Sept. CEO Insights lunch\, Mr. Scott Gold\, the boss of PAE in Japan\, will share his insights on the military bases and how they are related to so many other things in our businesses\, politics\, and society. \nScott Gold\nScott is an architect who has lived and worked in Japan for 20 of the last 35 years. He joined PAE in 2009. He also serves as AIA Japan Chapter President for 2017. \nDate: Wednesday\, 13 Sept 2017\, 12:30PM-14:00PM\nVenue: Roppongi Hills Club – Proteus\n51 fl. SUMMARY:2017 Sep G3 - Addictive Technology And The Role of Social Media In Business
DESCRIPTION:The popularity of addictive technology is rapidly increasing\, prompting obsessive use of smartphones and other digital gadgets. \nMore than ever\, Social Media plays a key role in how companies and brands interact with clients\, staff\, stakeholders and vendors. Although a great medium for expression\, Social Media can be dangerous as it greatly influences how we think\, behave and act. \nIn September\, Robert Heldt\, president and co-founder of Tokyo-based award-winning creative agency Custom Media\, will lead what promises to be an engaging and enlightening debate on the dangers of “nomophobia” (no-mobile-phone phobia)\, and share his insights on Social Media and its role in business.

SUMMARY:2017 Aug G3 - Recognising Leadership Blind Spots
DESCRIPTION:Global Research Findings From Dale Carnegie Across 14 countries \nThe primary objective of this cross-cultural leadership study was to identify key leadership characteristics that motivate and inspire people. \nLoyal customers come from positive customer experiences\, which in turn are the result of experiences created by engaged employees. The employee engagement piece relies on leadership at all levels. \nThe data revealed a remarkable number of similarities in the way employees think about their leaders and leadership characteristics in general. \nDr. Greg Story\, President of Dale Carnegie training will take us through the results and highlight the findings and identify some of the common perception gaps between leaders and staff.

SUMMARY:2017 Jul C8 - Life At 100\, How Longevity Will Transform Society
DESCRIPTION:At CEO Insights\, we talk a lot about human resources as people are the core of most businesses. In our generation\, we are seeing transformational changes in our work forces as well as working lives. The potential of a very long life\, more than 100 years old\, is approaching very fast and will become commonplace within a few years. In 1900 the average life expectancy in the US was 47 and today is 79 and increasing every year. \nThe arrival of a very long life will have significant implications for individuals\, employers and governments.\nAmong the key questions are: \n・　　How do we continue learning?\n・　　How do we change our current three stage life of education\, employment and retirement?\n・　　What will be the impact on families\, work and education \nThis month’s CI will be presented by Gerald Lema\, a C-Level executive with over 28 years of experience in major pharma and biotech companies. Currently\, Gerald is Managing Director of Cylon Capital\, a private investment firm investing in biotech\, FinTech and industrial technology.

SUMMARY:2017 Jul C20 - What Are The Implications Of G20 On Our Businesses?
DESCRIPTION:Ten years after the financial crisis\, G20 head-of-state meetings are widely considered as “Talking Club” events. Ironically\, however\, Mr. Trump’s best efforts to undermine international cooperation seem to turn the Hamburg Summit this weekend into a highly relevant meeting to discuss alliances\, align strategies\, and find new ground beyond US leadership. While the meetings of Mr. Trump\, Putin and Xi will grab the headlines\, talks at side of the event\, including a new Japan-EU FTA\, strategies for energy and digital security\, as well as about the future of globalization will be at least as important. Let’s discuss which cards have been put on the table and what we have learned from behind the smoke screens. \nIn the July CI meeting\, we welcome Mr. Martin Schulz\, Senior Research Fellow\, Fujitsu Research Institute. Martin was a popular speaker at a past CEO Insights Forum in the evening. He will be coming back to share his insights and spur a discussion on some of the outcomes of the G20 summit in Europe. Please join us as we discuss \n* G20 in Hamburg – The frictions and solutions\n* US international policy is taking shape – Who is engaging whom?\n* The end of globalization or a new start on digital platforms?

SUMMARY:2017 Jul G3 - Urban Development- Projects and Workplace Trends That Will Shape Future Business
DESCRIPTION:With the Olympics in sight\, tourism on the rise and Abenomics’ stimulus policies\, the urban development of Tokyo is accelerating. From Tokyo Station to Roppongi\, Toranomon\, Shinjuku\, and Nihonbashi\, it’s very hard not to notice the constant construction of new buildings. What is behind these developments? How will it affect the real estate market? And who is going to occupy all these buildings? \nIn the July CEO Insights meeting\, we will have a special lunch with Mitsui Fudosan\, Japan’s largest real estate developer. Mitsui Fudosan has invited CI members and will provide insights in the urban development of Tokyo and the workplace trends that drive the market. Over lunch we will discuss: \n· 　Future urban development of Tokyo\n· 　Corporate real estate trends and how it might affect our businesses\n· 　Workstyle changes and their impact on real estate

SUMMARY:2017 June C8 - Preparing Your Business To Stand Against Cyber Attacks
DESCRIPTION:From the CEO’s office perspective\, our teams bring various requests. Some require a lot of our attention\, while other areas would be better delegated to our management teams. With the recent rise in malicious software attacks\, we’re seeing more and more techniques used to dive deeper into our businesses. Social engineering\, corporate espionage and various other attacks can not only hurt our business but it can disable it. The recent attack of the WannaCry ransomware had a major cost for those organizations that are not prepared to withstand a cyber attack. In the June CI we will discuss \n・Recent attacks and how companies were broken\n・How to make sure your technology team is thinking outside of the box and giving you the best without breaking the bank\n・Personal precautions the CEO should take to protect both themselves at home and in the office

SUMMARY:2017 June C20 - Build a coaching culture\, and watch your business grow
DESCRIPTION:Robert Burnside will help you envision a culture of coaching within your company\, and how to leverage people’s desire to learn in order to build motivation\, initiative\, innovation and productivity. \nIn the 1950s Peter Drucker proposed a management revolution: a flatter\, more inclusive approach\, tapping the creative power of all levels of the organisation—in place of the entrenched command-and-control culture of the day. The idea caught on\, as it made so much good sense. Hundreds of thought leaders and thousands of books elaborated on Drucker\, and today\, most successful corporations buy into his theory. \nSo why do many managers complain of disengagement\, low motivation\, high stress levels\, or lack of entrepreneurial spirit? Why do many startups begin to crumble when professional management steps in? Why is it so difficult to execute on Drucker’s great theories? Because we don’t understand the key component of execution at every level—ourselves. \nIf you coach a person instead of telling him\, he will know and trust himself\, and you\, sufficiently to take more ownership\, make his own decisions\, grow himself\, and grow his results. He will build self-awareness. And if you cascade a culture of coaching through your company\, you begin a growth of self-awareness through the organisation\, and capture the magic ingredient of motivation\, retention\, and being a Great Place to Work: trust. \nRobert\, a full-time professional executive coach and trainer of coaches\, will discuss: \n•	what a coaching culture looks like\n•	what coaching really means\n•	why it can benefit your company and you personally\n•	a simple low-risk how-to of getting started (without ever saying “roll-out”)

SUMMARY:2017 June G3 - The Pulse Of Healthcare In Japan
DESCRIPTION:For the CEO\, there are many variables we must be aware of to manage our business. At CI we talk frequently about taxation\, human resources\, systems\, and many other areas. In taking care of our teams\, there are tremendous costs associated with healthcare\, retirement\, and training. Healthcare is an area that we don’t talk about but is something the boss needs to understand. With the government healthcare has become a major issue with a push towards cost cutting with generic drugs\, the social insurance system is struggling to keep up with the ballooning costs\, and other challenges make us wonder what is the current condition of healthcare in Japan and how does it affect our business? \nIn the June CI meeting\, our own member boss of J&J’s Japan operations\, Mr. Tom Hiiro will guide us through a very interesting discussion on the condition of healthcare in Japan as we plan to cover areas such as \n・The condition of healthcare services in Japan\n・Behind the scenes insights into the industry and trends\n・How healthcare can affect the CEOs bottomline

SUMMARY:Special Joint CI Meeting- Understanding eCommerce Better In The C-Suite (Barilla)
DESCRIPTION:In our era of leadership\, CI members have seen the transformation of marketing from print and billboards to digital marketing and online. Having a brand that reflects well online is essential to being a successful enterprise.  As eCommerce and online marketing is a relatively new area\, there aren’t many universities teaching about the business or people experienced in the area that we can help from day one.  There is a lot to learn and it is valuable to get insights from those who have already done so. \n  \nMr. Guy Keeling\, Vice President Global e-Commerce at the Barilla Group\, will be visiting Japan in May.  Barilla Group is a global leader at driving online food sales working with the world’s winning grocery e-retailers\, being hailed by L2 as a Thought Leader and publicly recognized by Amazon as a Top 5 CPG to work with.  For the past four years\, Barilla’s global e-Commerce revenues have grown at double the industry average.  Prior to taking up his role at Barilla four years ago\, Mr Keeling worked in leadership roles at Tesco and at Procter & Gamble.  On May 16\, we will have the opportunity to get to know Mr. Keeling in a joint CEO Insights event.\n \n\nYou will also have the opportunity to catch up with other CI members from the other two groups. Please note\, this is an invitation-only event with limited space due to the room size. We will accommodate as many people in as possible.

SUMMARY:2017 May C20 - Shifting A Nation- From Savers To Investors
DESCRIPTION:For decades\, Japan has been the land of low interest rates\, and with the advent of Abenomics interest rates have gone from low to zero and even into negative territory. Taking a loan has never been so cheap\, yet Japanese citizens and companies continue to hesitate to borrow and invest. Citizens in Japan are sitting on huge and increasing savings\, more than half of which lay idle in cash deposits bearing no interest. The government wants to change the country from a savings mindset to an investing mindset to ensure better future prospects for all\, and has engaged various measures towards that goal. But encouraging people to take more risk is one thing; protecting the public from overly risky or unscrupulous investments is another. This makes changing the savings to investment transition even more challenging. Enter the revived concept of Fiduciary Duty\, Japan-style\, which requires our banks and financial intermediaries to implement measures protecting their clients and investors. \nIn the May CI meeting\, experienced banker and financial boss Mr. Laurent Depus leads the discussion on what is going on inside the consumer market\, the banking industry\, and government. Mr. Depus is the Managing Director of French financial house Natixis’ Japan business and a long term resident of Japan. He also serves on the board of a Japanese financial industry leading firm. \nCome join us for insights on what our bankers sell us in Japan\, and how!

SUMMARY:2017 May G3 - The New Model- Using Multi-Channel Media To Increase Our Brand Influence And Revenue
DESCRIPTION:Online advertising surpassed print advertising in volume in 2012. According to a study released in 2012 by eMarketer\, online advertising was expected to generate $39.5 billion in sales that year — a 23.3% increase from 2011 — compared to $33.8 billion on print. However\, like anything humans do\, it’s hard to break old habits. Fast forward to 2017\, there are still some newspapers with help wanted adverts and magazines advertising luxury brands. How effective is that? The model for raising your brand awareness and your important influence on the market has changed. CEOs must be aware of what media\, whether it be social\, online\, or print\, can have on their brand. \nHow can we manage our brands with our team members? How do we increase the exposure for the brands that our teams sell and support? What can we do for the future of our brand and new product ideas? How do we harness the power of the new Millennial work force coming into our ranks? In the May CEO Insights\, we will discuss effective ways to manage our corporate brands in this new era of media for our teams\, distributors\, and most importantly our clients.

SUMMARY:2017 Apr C8 - The C-Level- Tax Planning and Effectively Using Your Money Toolbox
DESCRIPTION:As a CEO of a Japanese\, MNC\, or regional firm we are responsible for many resources.  We have people\, facilities\, business development\, marketing\, warehousing\, and a myriad of other company ‘assets’ to manage\, maximize and grow.  Although human resources seem to be a frequent theme at CEO Insights\, there is another area that heavily impacts our output: finances and taxes. CEO are not only responsible for corporate finances but also need to be wise with our personal finances as we live in multiple countries\, travel frequently\, and have many organizations wanting to get into our wallets.  Individual income rate go up to 55.9%.    Income and asset reporting duties have become more onerous.  Tax liabilities abound.  Bright CEOs must understand both corporate and individual implications. \nChallenges in corporate tax risk management and compliance hit the c-level on the company side with constant change and ever evolving tax changes.  In the April please join us for lunch with Hans-Peter Musahl\, a partner with EY Tax in Tokyo. Mr. Musahl has hands on experience in advising people on how to use their financial toolbox.  He advises executives and business in mostly Japan and Europe.

SUMMARY:2017 Apr G3 - Telsa\, Disrupting Distribution With A Direct Retail Approach
DESCRIPTION:Many people think of Henry Ford when we think of automobiles and their invention.  However\, self propelled vehicles have been around in various forms since the 1800s.  We saw steam\, electric\, and petroleum powered vehicles.  Various electric cars concepts have been around\, yet without breaking the monopoly of fossil fuel powered engines. Combustion based engines have dominated and networks of dealers as well as services has been around them.  Things have finally started to change. \nTesla came to market with high-performance battery based vehicles and has not only challenged the automotive dealer models but also gotten into the core software architecture as well as energy infrastructure area.  In this month’s CEO Insights join us as we hear from Tesla’s VP of North & SE Asia.  We welcome Mr. Nicolas Villeger who will share his insights on how Tesla is completely changing the way people think about automobile purchase and ownership.  Mr. Villeger is no stranger to brands\, he joined Tesla after a successful career at Coach\, Longchamp\, and Estee Lauder.
