SUMMARY:Heeding The Call For Corporate Governance
DESCRIPTION:Masako Egawa\nFor more than 20 years\, there have been calls for improved corporate governance\, but for many companies it has been little more than an effort goal\, and for the most part the debate has been about the pros and cons of shareholder focus.  However\, with the successive revisions of the Companies Act\, the enactment of the Corporate Governance Code\, the introduction of the Integrated Reporting System\, and the pressure from international investors\, Japanese companies have been forced to face up to this issue and create a system to deal with it. The increase in the number of outside directors is also a manifestation of this trend. Corporate governance has gone from being merely a special field of business administration to being considered essential knowledge for many businesspeople. \nThe topic of corporate governance was brought up a few times at CEO Insights.  The high level of interest and response of our network members was overwhelming.  Business is not just about sales\, people\, and production.  CEOs must also understand the business environment within the nations where they operate.  In this CI luncheon\, you will get to meet an accomplished businessperson\, writer\, and educator.  Dr. Masako Egawa (PhD)\, our speaker\, will talk about corporate governance in Japan.  She will \n\nprovide an overview on corporate governance in Japan;\nwill explain how management and governance are intertwined; and\nwill explain how companies should be governed to maximize their business.\n\nParticipants will gain insight on corporate management\, either as managers or investors\, and on outside directors.  Don’t miss this great opportunity to make sure you have the right line of thinking in this important area of our businesses. \n  \nMore on Dr. Masako Egawa- \nDr. Egawa is Chancellor of Seikei Gakuen\, a private school for primary\, secondary and higher education with approximately 10\,000 students in Kichijoji. She teaches corporate governance at the University of Tokyo\, where she also served as the first female Executive Vice President from 2009 to 2015. She also taught at Hitotsubashi University and Keio University. She founded the Japan Research Center of the Harvard Business School in 2001 and served as its Executive Director until 2009. Prior to this\, Dr. Egawa worked in the investment banking industry for 15 years in New York and Tokyo. She is an independent director of Mitsui & Co.\, Ltd.\, and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation\, and has served numerous councils including the Tax Council (advisory body for the Prime Minister) and the Financial System Council. SUMMARY:Investor's Lunch Discussion- Japan's Hottest Investment Areas
DESCRIPTION:Many companies spend money on development\, training\, production facilities and various other areas of their businesses to bring growth.  As a c-level\, many of us see investment from the corporate perspective.  Investing is corporate\, but it can also be personal.  In the August CEO Insights meeting we will have an interactive lunch discussing investment successes and failures both in business and personally.  This meeting will be an invaluable opportunity to talk about real estate\, precious metals\, the financial markets\, acquistion\, and many other areas of investments.  We will be joined by C. James Lee\, Managing Partner of GI Capital Management who is looking forward to hearing your experiences and sharing some of his own. \nMore about Jim Lee- \nPrior to establishing GI Capital in 2010\, Jim was co-heading the Equities Division for Deutsche Bank Japan as a Managing Director. Before joining Deutsche Bank Japan\, Jim spent four years at UBS Japan managing the Japanese equities sales business as a Managing Director. SUMMARY:Inflation\, Interest Rates\, and The Future Of The Japan Magic Money Tree
DESCRIPTION:The world is in constant flux and does not seem to be limited to one particular region or nation.  In the global arena\, actions that affect one nation can – and often – have major impacts on others.  With a three-decade high inflation and a seemingly unyielding grip on its monetary policy\, what changes or developments can be expected in Japan?  Furthermore\, how is the BoJ’s control of interest rates affecting the future of business\, labour\, and inflation? \nIn June\, we will welcome Dr. Rodrigo González\, Tokyo Director of The Economist newspaper’s EICN division in Japan. Mr. González\, who holds a Ph.D. in economics from Keio University\, has closely studied the evolution of Japan’s economic landscape and regularly moderates plenary events for executive members in EICN’s corporate network. Rodrigo will lead us in a discussion about: \n\n– Japan’s current economic directions and trajectory\n– How interest rates may affect business expansion and investment\n\n– How companies and consumers are dealing with high inflation \nJoin us for this great interaction on the economy where you will certainly leave with insights from other business leaders\, as well as our guest speaker. \nMore on Rodrigo González\nDr. González works closely with regional business leaders to assist them in organisational and technological adaptability to foster business competitiveness\, to quickly identify opportunities and risks from changes in market trends or public policy\, and to broaden their business network and enhance their connections to their c-suite peers. \nHe has vast experience in statistical analysis\, strategy consulting and market research in many different industries inside and outside Japan. He is a published author in academic journals and has presented his work at numerous conferences on economics and public policy throughout the world.

SUMMARY:“That Country Manager Has to Go!”
DESCRIPTION:That country manager has to go!  This is a theme more common than you would expect.  So many MNCs are chronically dissatisfied with who’s running the show for them in Japan that one of our members has built a business stepping into the breech on an “interim” basis. Some of these engagements run a few weeks and others last for years. This should be a lively round table discussion of how expectations get so far out of alignment and who’s to blame. \nAbout Our Moderator- \nJoin the CEO Insights Network and member CEO Leo Keeley.  Leo is one of the more well-known figures in the Japanese IT industry\, with 25 years of sales\, management and technology leadership experience. After receiving his BS from Bentley University and MBA from Suffolk University\, Leo headed to Japan where he studied the Japanese language and business culture. He founded Japan B2B Sales (originally Japan Leadership) in 2004. The firm’s charter is to grow revenue\, increase profitability and improve organizational efficiency for US IT firms. Clients have included Computer Associates\, Dassault Systemes\, HP\, Peregrine Systems and Symantec. Prior to Japan B2B Sales\, Leo served as VP – APAC-Japan for Ariba\, Inc. He was successful in boosting sales and profitability as well as extricating the firm from an acrimonious joint venture in Japan.

SUMMARY:Show Business- What Does It Take To Make It?
DESCRIPTION:There’s no business like show business… as the song goes at least.  Movies\, films\, video.. we see a lot of successful films that come out.  There are thousands of others that are not exactly so successful.  In fact they probably lose money.  What does it take to produce a movie?  What are the costs\, the popular genres\, and other challenges to surmount?  The good news is we can get answers to these questions directly from someone who has produced a film and is a regular CI networker. \nIn August\, Stefan Sacre will be sharing his insights on a film he produced for his native market back in Germany.  He’ll share his thoughts on this business and what he experienced. His years of business experience\, keen eye for imagery\, and Japan experience surely helped guide him in this creative venture.

SUMMARY:ESGs and Sustainability- What You Really Need To Know
DESCRIPTION:For some\, ESGs and Sustainability are processes to live by.  For other organizations\, they are just the latest fad or buzz words which managers like to capitalize on. One of the key areas we will feel the products of its presence is food production. \nIn the June CEO Insights meeting\, Mr. Erol Emed of Soul of Japan will be discussing their business model and why investors and market players are supporting the sustainable food production model they have built their business on. He will discuss: \n– What are the economic\, social\, and environmental developments behind the drive in food sustainability \n-How sustainability and ESGs built Soul of Japan’s business \n-The future of ESG and sustainability wave (it is not a wave you can ride to gain economic benefit\, but a structural trend which you will ignore at your own peril) \n-The dark side of the climate cult \nJoin for another insightful meeting at CEO Insights!  Reservations required. \nBio- Mr. Erol Emed \nBachelor of Science\, Middle East Technology University\, Ankara\, 1985. Master of Arts\, International University Japan\, Niigata\, 1989. SUMMARY:Bitcoin RELOADED— A Financial Revolution?
DESCRIPTION:Last year US headline inflation hit a 39 year record high 7%. The Fed is signaling rate rises this year in attempt to quell this inflation\, meanwhile the US sovereign debt sits at an unprecedented $30 trillion. How much can the Fed really raise rates in this environment? Where is monetary policy headed as governments of the world seek to manage debt and structural deficits while paying for ever increasing social security while fighting a global pandemic? Finally\, how does Bitcoin fit in with all this\, and how is it different to alternative cryptocurrencies\, private sector payment (Alipay\, PayPay\, etc.\, ) or even Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) \nIn the February CI network meeting\, we will welcome a special guest (that will go unnamed). This gentlemen hails from the United Kingdom and is very active in the the topic area personally. In this interactive discussion\, we will cover \n\nIs Bitcoin digital gold?\nBitcoin’s killer app: self-sovereignty and security.\nBitcoin’s Achilles Heel: Privacy?\n\nThis is what many of you have been asking for so we’re excited to share this information in our group. Please remember to RSVP. Last month we couldn’t get everyone around the table but thankfully we were able to get everyone in the room.

SUMMARY:Industry In Upheaval- The Future Of The Global Automotive Market
DESCRIPTION:The global auto industry stands on the brink of unprecedented change and upheaval. From the challenges of electrification and autonomous driving to the arrival of interloping upstarts from Silicon Valley and China\, the global car business is undergoing a once-in-a-century transformation. Unprecedented sums of money are being invested on future technologies as automakers – old and new – race to make inroads into uncharted territory\, banking on a future that is anything but guaranteed. What bets will pay off? Which automakers will survive the fight? And what will cars look like in the decades to come?

SUMMARY:2022 Jan (Thur) The Metaverse: Who\, When\, How\, and Why?
DESCRIPTION:What is the Metaverse? Why did such a massive entity like Facebook make the risky move of rebranding itself META? \nUnderstanding the metaverse is complicated\, especially because it doesn’t exist yet. Although interoperability is a long way off\, the term has become a catch-all for new digital\, immersive\, and social spaces encompassing gaming platforms\, NFTs\, VR\, AR\, cryptocurrencies and online marketplaces. \nSome very big companies are putting big money into this space\, and money tends to make things happen. \nLet’s talk about which companies are likely to be the major players? Will efforts to create a unified metaverse or a multi-verse configuration likely succeed? \nHow other companies can get involved in a commercial sense? \nWhat will be the dominant technology VR or AR? How will NFTs\, cryptocurrencies and blockchain be involved? \nIt may be fun to explore how each of the members feels about living in a virtual world versus the real world. It seems different age groups feel differently about this. \nDon’t miss this interactive session led by Excape Entertainment CEO Mr. James Fiorillo

SUMMARY:2021 Aug (Thu)- The Future Of Luxury Goods. Accelerated – A Talk with Chopard Japan’s Boss
DESCRIPTION:The virus fears of 2020 may be recorded in history as the most massive disruption to the retail business ever.  In particular\, luxury goods have felt the pain of the challenge for clients to get into the beautiful stores despite their prime locations.  It may have been tough\, but high-end luxury is timeless and most brands are here for years to come.  High quality goods will continue to be in high demand.  One key trend that significantly accelerated during the crisis is “Sustainable Luxury”.   \n\n\nChopard announced the “Journey to Sustainable Luxury” already in 2013\, when most people in the industry did not even know what sustainability is. Since 2019\, Chopard is the first brand to produce all its jewellery and watch creations with 100% ethical gold\, leading the industry into a new era of CSR.   \n\n\nMr. Thomas Dobeli\, President of Chopard Japan will be sharing his insights on the future of luxury.  Chopard is one of very few remaining independent and family owned global luxury brands.  Recently\, Thomas was invited to give guest lectures at Kyoto University’s MBA class as well as Hitotsubashi University ICS’s MBA class on this topic.  Thomas is a long time resident of Japan and is a native Swiss that brings his brand to life in Japan. \n\n\nCome join CI for another fascinating topic and lunch meeting.   \n\n\nMore on our guest CEO Thomas Dobeli here. \n\n\n\n***This is a members-only event.  If you are a c-level and would like to visit\, please contact the CI admin team to check for available outside guest seats at the table for this event.

SUMMARY:2021 Aug (Tues) - Building A New Business With OLD Buildings
DESCRIPTION:As a network of able CEOs\, both younger and older\, we always enjoy hearing about other people’s businesses. We’ve enjoyed discussions with major software global CEOs\, global retailers\, local robot manufacturers\, and countless other dives into various businesses. \nFor some reason\, the English media has a news cycle that restarts every year or so about the millions of vacant or abandoned properties around the nation. Some say for as little as ¥50\,000 JPY ($500 USD). Many times associated with population decline or the move from the smaller towns and cities to the major metro areas such as Osaka\, Tokyo\, or Fukuoka\, vacant properties seem to be a major problem for municipalities around the country. But our friends at Akiya & Inaka see it differently. \nIn the August CI Network luncheon we will welcome Matthew Ketchum\, Co-Founder\, Akiya & Inaka.  Matthew will share how he and his business partner created an alternative real estate business model that turns a perceived problem into practical opportunity.  \nThe accepted akiya narrative posits that Japan’s vacant buildings are categorically condemnable for all but the most committed DIY hobbyists and irredeemably rural\, but Akiya & Inaka have proven that this is not the case. $500 or $500\,000 or more\, there are akiya of all types at all levels of viability\, and they’re being used for more than just vacation homes or bed & breakfasts. Join us for this fascinating discussion that gives us the real deal on what the story on the ground is. Who knows? You may even come out of it with a new property. \nMore about Matthew Ketchum here on Linkedin\, with his company website here.

SUMMARY:2021 July (Tues) The Future Of Work\, Management\, And Motivation- A Discussion With Audio Giant JABRA
DESCRIPTION:Over the last year\, both inside and outside of the CI network business leaders have discussed the future of work.  The larger companies have predicted a complete move to WFH (work from home)\, while medium-sized businesses have questioned the productivity of the team.  For employees\, eliminating the commute cuts an hour or two of transport out of their day. However\, the loss of in-person collaboration seems to have an effect on productivity.  What’s the real story on the ground? \nIn July’s CI network luncheon we will welcome Danish audio manufacturer Jabra’s boss Mr. Yasushi Ando. Mr. Ando will share how Jabra sees the market as work from home generated incredible demand for Jabra products for both personal and corporates.  He will also give us insights on how companies are changing\, as well as how they actually keep doing the same thing. \nNetwork Members– Please RSVP below if you would like to participate.  Guests– Please contact us via our contact form if you would like us to check about getting a spot at the table. \nMore about Mr. Ando here on L-in

DESCRIPTION:Recently\, the national government declared another ‘state of emergency’ in an effort to keep the coronavirus from spreading. All the lockdowns\, work from home (WFH) and daily fear in the mass media seem to have greatly stressed the population. SUMMARY:An Inside View of Japan's New Digital Agency
DESCRIPTION:The novel coronavirus pandemic has exposed long-acknowledged shortfalls in some critical government administrative services and highlighted how much Japan must do to address its lag in digitization. To that end\, the government in February approved bills to promote digitization and establish a Digital Agency in September. Coordinating\, integrating and standardizing a unique digital framework to boost the quality of public services is a key policy of the Suga administration. In line with this\, the government also wants to enhance Japan’s attractiveness as a digital infrastructure hub. \nTogether\, we will explore current discussions in the Diet\, the challenges ahead\, and which industries are likely to be affected by the government’s digitization push. We will also examine how much Japan’s digital transformation has progressed\, and whether the government can finally succeed in digitizing its complex administration as an example for the rest of society. Please join us for this timely discussion on digital policy in the post-corona era. \nThis CEO Insights lunch on April 15th will be moderated by seasoned government relations expert Timothy Langley. Mr. Langley is founder and CEO of Langley Esquire\, Tokyo’s premier public affairs consulting firm dedicated to resolving issues in Japan’s unique regulatory environment.
