SUMMARY:2021 Aug (Tues) - Building A New Business With OLD Buildings
DESCRIPTION:As a network of able CEOs\, both younger and older\, we always enjoy hearing about other people’s businesses. We’ve enjoyed discussions with major software global CEOs\, global retailers\, local robot manufacturers\, and countless other dives into various businesses. \nFor some reason\, the English media has a news cycle that restarts every year or so about the millions of vacant or abandoned properties around the nation. Some say for as little as ¥50\,000 JPY ($500 USD). Many times associated with population decline or the move from the smaller towns and cities to the major metro areas such as Osaka\, Tokyo\, or Fukuoka\, vacant properties seem to be a major problem for municipalities around the country. But our friends at Akiya & Inaka see it differently. \nIn the August CI Network luncheon we will welcome Matthew Ketchum\, Co-Founder\, Akiya & Inaka.  Matthew will share how he and his business partner created an alternative real estate business model that turns a perceived problem into practical opportunity.  \nThe accepted akiya narrative posits that Japan’s vacant buildings are categorically condemnable for all but the most committed DIY hobbyists and irredeemably rural\, but Akiya & Inaka have proven that this is not the case. $500 or $500\,000 or more\, there are akiya of all types at all levels of viability\, and they’re being used for more than just vacation homes or bed & breakfasts. Join us for this fascinating discussion that gives us the real deal on what the story on the ground is. Who knows? You may even come out of it with a new property. \nMore about Matthew Ketchum here on Linkedin\, with his company website here.

SUMMARY:2021 July (Tues) The Future Of Work\, Management\, And Motivation- A Discussion With Audio Giant JABRA
DESCRIPTION:Over the last year\, both inside and outside of the CI network business leaders have discussed the future of work.  The larger companies have predicted a complete move to WFH (work from home)\, while medium-sized businesses have questioned the productivity of the team.  For employees\, eliminating the commute cuts an hour or two of transport out of their day. However\, the loss of in-person collaboration seems to have an effect on productivity.  What’s the real story on the ground? \nIn July’s CI network luncheon we will welcome Danish audio manufacturer Jabra’s boss Mr. Yasushi Ando. Mr. Ando will share how Jabra sees the market as work from home generated incredible demand for Jabra products for both personal and corporates.  He will also give us insights on how companies are changing\, as well as how they actually keep doing the same thing. \nNetwork Members– Please RSVP below if you would like to participate.  Guests– Please contact us via our contact form if you would like us to check about getting a spot at the table. \nMore about Mr. Ando here on L-in

SUMMARY:May (Thurs) -Understanding The Background Effects Of Wuhan\, Lockdowns\, And Employee Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, the national government declared another ‘state of emergency’ in an effort to keep the coronavirus from spreading. All the lockdowns\, work from home (WFH) and daily fear in the mass media seem to have greatly stressed the population. Being stuck at home with limited social interaction\, mass layoffs by struggling businesses\, and other concerns for the future have taken a toll on both the experienced and new workers. \nIn the May meeting\, CEO Insights members will welcome the chairman of Tokyo English Life Line\, or TELL. This NPO supports and counsels people who are struggling in such a challenging environment. Join us to discuss: \n\nThe current state of the local employee in Japan\nWhat the government and NPOs are doing to respond to the high suicide rates of Japan\nWhat companies can do to create a positive working environment for their teams\n\nJoin us for an insightful meeting that will help you better understand the needs of your team as well as the society that currently surrounds them.

SUMMARY:An Inside View of Japan's New Digital Agency
DESCRIPTION:The novel coronavirus pandemic has exposed long-acknowledged shortfalls in some critical government administrative services and highlighted how much Japan must do to address its lag in digitization. To that end\, the government in February approved bills to promote digitization and establish a Digital Agency in September. Coordinating\, integrating and standardizing a unique digital framework to boost the quality of public services is a key policy of the Suga administration. In line with this\, the government also wants to enhance Japan’s attractiveness as a digital infrastructure hub. \nTogether\, we will explore current discussions in the Diet\, the challenges ahead\, and which industries are likely to be affected by the government’s digitization push. We will also examine how much Japan’s digital transformation has progressed\, and whether the government can finally succeed in digitizing its complex administration as an example for the rest of society. Please join us for this timely discussion on digital policy in the post-corona era. \nThis CEO Insights lunch on April 15th will be moderated by seasoned government relations expert Timothy Langley. Mr. Langley is founder and CEO of Langley Esquire\, Tokyo’s premier public affairs consulting firm dedicated to resolving issues in Japan’s unique regulatory environment.

SUMMARY:The Future Of Luxury Goods. Accelerated - A Talk with Chopard Japan's Boss
DESCRIPTION:The virus fears of 2020 may be recorded in history as the most massive disruption to the retail business ever.  In particular\, luxury goods have felt the pain of the challenge for clients to get into the beautiful stores despite their prime locations.  It may have been tough\, but high-end luxury is timeless and most brands are here for years to come.  High quality goods will continue to be in high demand.  One key trend that significantly accelerated during the crisis is “Sustainable Luxury”.   \n\n\nChopard announced the “Journey to Sustainable Luxury” already in 2013\, when most people in the industry did not even know what sustainability is. Since 2019\, Chopard is the first brand to produce all its jewellery and watch creations with 100% ethical gold\, leading the industry into a new era of CSR.   \n\n\nMr. Thomas Dobeli\, President of Chopard Japan will be sharing his insights on the future of luxury.  Chopard is one of very few remaining independent and family owned global luxury brands.  Recently\, Thomas was invited to give guest lectures at Kyoto University’s MBA class as well as Hitotsubashi University ICS’s MBA class on this topic.  Thomas is a long time resident of Japan and is a native Swiss that brings his brand to life in Japan. \n\n\nCome join CI for another fascinating topic and lunch meeting.   \n\n\nMore on our guest CEO Thomas Dobeli here. \n\n\n\n***This is a members-only event.  If you are a c-level and would like to visit\, please contact the CI admin team to check for available outside guest seats at the table for this event.

SUMMARY:Feb G3 - A Bird's Eye View- The Latest On The Tokyo Olympics
DESCRIPTION:The Olympic’s are returning to Tokyo.  After 4 years of hearing about the Olympics\, the year has finally arrived.  The last Olympics Tokyo saw were in 1964.  Japan made a lot of effort to build up for the Olympics with one of the main accompaniments many use every day being the Shuto expressway.  In 2019\, the World Cup Rugby tournament lit the fires to see more athletics with events around Japan and drawing millions of visitors to Japan from around the world.\n\nIn the February CEO Insights Tuesday lunch\, we will be talking about what we can expect to see in business\, transportation\, hospitality\, and the overall impact of the Olympics on Japan this time.  Visiting the lunch will be CEO of STH Hospitality Mr. Brendan Delahunty.  Mr. Delahunty was very involved in the Rugby World Cup as the leader of the Japan business.  He has the experience that can add to our insights on the impact of the Olympics in a group discussion.\n\nSports Travel & Hospitality Japan is the leading provider of sports hospitality and premium spectator experiences in Japan. STH was the exclusive provider of sports hospitality for Rugby World Cup 2019™ and previously operated the official in-venue hospitality program at the London 2012 Olympic Games.\n\n\nWe look forward to an interesting interaction in February as sports marketing and Olympics are of considerable interest amongst our network bosses.

Based on more than 20 years of experience in Japan and Asia in consumer goods\, Jean Henaff will show how all those issues can be understood\, clarified and solved by simple approaches exploring the generation of brand meaning and consumer culture. \nThe presentation will show how some Western and Japanese brands have successfully adapted their communication\, store architecture and merchandising to a radically different context while being able at the same time to strongly assert their unique values. \n\n\nAbout The Speaker\n\nJean Henaff is a consultant using extensively semiotic research tools to provide marketing advice to leading Western and Japanese companies in cosmetics\, luxury and food industries. He is a native French speaker and he is also fluent in English and Japanese. SUMMARY:2019 Nov (G3)- How The Hospitality Industry And The Hotel Business Is Changing In Japan
DESCRIPTION:The astute c-level knows that if you’re not growing with your product in the market place\, chances are\, you will be left behind in the future.  Businesses have to be constantly enhancing their offerings to meet the needs of the clients\, whether it is existing or anticipated.  The hospitality industry in Japan is not typical.  It has many players\, mostly offering commodity products\, whether it be small rooms of the business hotels\, convenient but disconnected from P&L or the higher end luxury hotels that don’t invest in the tech to make themselves most efficient.  With more than 30M inbound tourists in Japan in 2018\, it would seem to be a great chance for the hospitality industry is being missed. \nIn the November CEO Insights lunch (G3)\, we will welcome Mr. Seth Sulkin who has really set the tone in Real Estate development in energy\, shopping malls\, and now hospitality.  In our interactive discussion\, Seth will share insights into how he is building a new business that takes advantage of the changed market and where he sees the hotel industry heading. \nMore on Mr. Sulkin- \nSeth will share some of his insights on the Japan market\, where it has come from and where it is going.  His firm\, Pacifica Capital\, is now focused on the hospitality industry. Pacifica is building and operating internationally-branded hotels in Tokyo\, Osaka\, and Kyoto. \nMEMBERS PLEASE RSVP AT BOTTOM OF PAGE

SUMMARY:2019 Sep (G3) Case Studies On Collaborating As Teams And The Microsoft Vision
DESCRIPTION:The way in which organizations work has evolved. There are several trends that we’re seeing regarding teamwork\, even in Japan. \nDiverse and global \nTeams are becoming more diverse. In today’s work environment\, teams are often comprised of people in different buildings\, time zones\, or even different companies. For the first time\, there are five generations in the workplace—all with different background and expectations about collaboration tools. For example\, some are comfortable chatting on a phone\, others prefer e-mail\, or face to face. How is work evolving?\n \nTeam-based and collaborative \nThere is also a movement towards transparency and inclusivity in how decisions are made. Organization structures are becoming more flat which results in people being on more—often cross-organizational—teams. And those teams are dynamic. It’s rare that people don’t change on a multi-month project. And when they leave\, the first step is for all to go through their e-mail to find the information needed to get the new person up to speed. Being on more teams has also led to a dramatic increase in the amount of collaboration. The new way of work is team-based and collaborative. Workers report that 80% of their time at work is spent collaborating (i.e. in meetings\, calls). \nGlobal Teams are increasingly geo distributed. Employees are no longer in the same office\, let alone time zone. Per IDC\, 72.3% of employees will be working remotely by 2020\, making it more challenging to have face-to-face conversations. \nFor many employees\, this has made collaboration more challenging. It’s hard to maintain open dialogue when teammates are distributed. It’s complicated to manage the volume of information. It’s difficult to attend every meeting. All these challenges hinder teamwork and productivity. We’ll look at how some global enterprises have tackled the issue with technology\, specifically Microsoft Teams. \nJoin us for a insightful discussion at the September CI luncheon with Alice Graham.  Alice is Assistant General Counsel\, Corporate\, External\, and Legal Affairs (CELA) Microsoft Japan\, Co.\, Ltd.  Alice heads up the external relations department and has very interesting experience on both the legal and political sides of business. \nPLEASE RSVP BELOW TO CONFIRM YOUR PLACE \n** CI does not collect payments on this website for lunches.  Please note that you will settle your lunch order payment with venue directly. \nMore On Alice Graham \nAlice Graham is seasoned inhouse legal department leader with over 20 years of experience\, working with industry leading companies and currently employed by Microsoft Japan Co.\, Ltd. where she leads an experienced team of legal\, government affairs\, philanthropy and digital crime professionals. She graduated from the University of Florida School of Law with honors and has spent most of her career in the technology industry.  After 12 plus years in Microsoft Corporation (Redmond) helping to deliver Windows to millions of users around the world\, she is passionate about leveraging that knowledge to drive digital transformation in Japan and make a difference in the lives of all Japanese.

SUMMARY:2017 Apr C20 - Understanding The Power Of LIcensing
DESCRIPTION:Japan has a constant influx of international brands looking to come to advantage of the market and it’s buying power each year. Of course\, importing a product\, setting up distribution\, and building brand aware all contribute to success in Japan\, this is not the only way. In the April CI lunch we will get a chance to hear the strengths of the FAUCHON model that has worked for over 45 years. They work in food\, drinks\, clothing\, and bags to name a few.  Why would licensing be an option? SUMMARY:2017 Apr G3 - Telsa\, Disrupting Distribution With A Direct Retail Approach
DESCRIPTION:Many people think of Henry Ford when we think of automobiles and their invention.  However\, self propelled vehicles have been around in various forms since the 1800s.  We saw steam\, electric\, and petroleum powered vehicles.  Various electric cars concepts have been around\, yet without breaking the monopoly of fossil fuel powered engines. Combustion based engines have dominated and networks of dealers as well as services has been around them.  Things have finally started to change. \nTesla came to market with high-performance battery based vehicles and has not only challenged the automotive dealer models but also gotten into the core software architecture as well as energy infrastructure area.  In this month’s CEO Insights join us as we hear from Tesla’s VP of North & SE Asia.  We welcome Mr. Nicolas Villeger who will share his insights on how Tesla is completely changing the way people think about automobile purchase and ownership.  Mr. Villeger is no stranger to brands\, he joined Tesla after a successful career at Coach\, Longchamp\, and Estee Lauder.

SUMMARY:2016 Nov G3 – Power Hitting- What Do I Need To Do For Explosive Growth?
DESCRIPTION:It’s rare that the CEO gets a chance to compare notes with other c-levels in their industry or even other businesses both greater and smaller. The CEO needs to be the visionary that sets the tone for the whole team. Any CEO that says she or he has no internal issues is usually hiding something. The power CEO identifies the issues and figures out a way to do things better. \nAs we bring 2016 to a close\, we will take advantage of the experience and mental power in the CI meeting. Our focus will be on what the CEO needs to do for planning the future of the firm. We plan to discuss\n•	How to set and implement realistic budgets\n•	Setting corporate sales\, service\, and production targets\n•	The big R- Resources\, Resources\, Resources! \nAlthough\, we will focus on planning. Other areas that may up are executive privilege\, making the most of real estate\, and corporate security. \nLooking forward to seeing you at CI as we plan for explosive growth!
