2017 Sept C8 – The Future Of Africa and ME, From The Eyes Of An Ambassador

In our upcoming Sept CI meeting, we have secured special guest Bulhan Hersi to join us.

Bulhan is essentially Ambassador without portfolio for the Federal Republic of Somalia. Educated in Sweden and the United States, Bulhan has lived for 12 years in Japan.

Bulhan will elaborate on the current situation in Somalia and the historical underpinnings of why the situation today is so much in the news. He will tie into how the Japanese government sees the region, the issue of piracy (and from where/how it emerged in the first place), Somalia’s precarious position geopolitically, and why this impacts Japan’s role in the region. In doing so, the following related issues are unavoidable:

• The Middle East fueling tensions in the Horn of Africa: the Qatar / Yemen issue;
• The background religious influence

• Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates increasing military influence in the region.

• The Iranian influence in the region

The September lunch will offer you a new perspective on the influence of politics, business, and religion in the ME and Africa; Somalia’s role is key to understanding this.

2017 Sep C20 – Understanding The Business Of Bases And the Military In Asia Pacific

For decades Japan and the United States have worked together on military bases spread throughout Japan. Those bases don’t end in Japan but are grounded throughout the Asia Pacific region. The bases are not just the political and government relationships that we read about in the news, but also considerable business and processes associated with the military. In the Sept. CEO Insights lunch, Mr. Scott Gold, the boss of PAE in Japan, will share his insights on the military bases and how they are related to so many other things in our businesses, politics, and society.

Scott Gold
Scott is an architect who has lived and worked in Japan for 20 of the last 35 years. He joined PAE in 2009. He also serves as AIA Japan Chapter President for 2017.

2017 Sept G3 – Addictive Technology And The Role of Social Media In Business

The popularity of addictive technology is rapidly increasing, prompting obsessive use of smartphones and other digital gadgets.

More than ever, Social Media plays a key role in how companies and brands interact with clients, staff, stakeholders and vendors. Although a great medium for expression, Social Media can be dangerous as it greatly influences how we think, behave and act.

In September, Robert Heldt, president and co-founder of Tokyo-based award-winning creative agency Custom Media, will lead what promises to be an engaging and enlightening debate on the dangers of “nomophobia” (no-mobile-phone phobia), and share his insights on Social Media and its role in business.

Global Research Findings From Dale Carnegie Across 14 countries

The primary objective of this cross-cultural leadership study was to identify key leadership characteristics that motivate and inspire people.

Loyal customers come from positive customer experiences, which in turn are the result of experiences created by engaged employees. The employee engagement piece relies on leadership at all levels.

The data revealed a remarkable number of similarities in the way employees think about their leaders and leadership characteristics in general.

Dr. Greg Story, President of Dale Carnegie training will take us through the results and highlight the findings and identify some of the common perception gaps between leaders and staff.

2017 July C8 – Life At 100, How Longevity Will Transform Society

At CEO Insights, we talk a lot about human resources as people are the core of most businesses. In our generation, we are seeing transformational changes in our work forces as well as working lives. The potential of a very long life, more than 100 years old, is approaching very fast and will become commonplace within a few years. In 1900 the average life expectancy in the US was 47 and today is 79 and increasing every year.

The arrival of a very long life will have significant implications for individuals, employers and governments.
Among the key questions are:

・ How do we continue learning?
・ How do we change our current three stage life of education, employment and retirement?
・ What will be the impact on families, work and education

This month’s CI will be presented by Gerald Lema, a C-Level executive with over 28 years of experience in major pharma and biotech companies. Currently, Gerald is Managing Director of Cylon Capital, a private investment firm investing in biotech, FinTech and industrial technology.
