December 2010- Charity & The Corporation
We are closing out 2010 CEO luncheons with a bang and getting ready for 2011. It has been a great year and special thanks to all those with all the excellent topics, presentations, and discussions. Many members so far have commented over the last few months how invaluable these meetings are to their insights in running businesses.
In December we’ll be looking at the topic of corporate charity. Many companies are doing things not only to show society that they care socially but also because there is a satisfaction of helping others. Other countries may be advanced when it comes to corporate social programs, but Japan seems to have some areas the CEO still needs to understand. Rumors of companies being charged taxes for items they give to those in need are not exactly motivational.
Lowell Shepherd CEO (Asia) of HOPE International, a Canadian headquartered charity. HOPE has been operating for about 30 years and raises around $30,000,000/year to help the extremely poor with micro credit. In addition, HOPE operates low-key activities such as “Cow Banking”. Lowell will present on the Charity industry, laws and environment in Japan.
We’ll also be discussing what works and what doesn’t work for corporations wanting to do more.

August 2010- The Staffing Industry- An Insider’s Perspective
One of the major challenges for any enterprise is the human resources part of the business. A very common topic in the C8 meetings is HR with regards to hiring, motivating, and in some cases firing people. In the August CEO meeting, we will have our own Jon Sparks leading the meeting. He has been connected to the HR business in all areas of hiring, firing, and motivating in his experience with IWNC as well as Wall Street Associates as their CEO.
The presentation is neither about “how to recruit” nor “tools, technologies & tips for recruiting”. Rather, as a past CEO/Chairman of a company that ranked in the top 1% of Japanese staffing firms, Jon will discuss practices in the industry in Japan including:
* Ethics
* Regulation (or rather the lack of it)
* Prevalent less-than-legal practices
* Where the industry is going (all companies need to understand this)
Don’t miss a chance to get out of the office and enjoy the August meeting with a nice lunch and great information exchange from fellow CEOs in Japan. Ask about any HR issues you (or ‘your friend’) might have.
